What this route actually is

Aviation splits into two routes that have almost nothing in common: flight crew, which is licensed and medically gated, and aviation or airport management, which is a business degree applied to a specific industry.

Students frequently conflate the two. A management degree does not lead to a cockpit, and a pilot licence is not obtained through a university programme.

What the work involves

  • Flight crew work is roster-based, with irregular hours, time away from home, and recurrent testing throughout the career.
  • Airport and airline management is operations work: scheduling, ground handling, safety compliance and customer service.
  • Both are heavily regulated environments where procedure compliance is the substance of the job.

Worth knowing before you commit

  • Flight training is self-funded at substantial cost and carries no guarantee of an airline position afterwards.
  • Medical certification can end a flying career at any point, which makes it a route with a structural risk most careers do not have.
  • Aviation management competes with general business graduates for the same operational roles.

The route, in order

  1. 01

    FSc Pre-Engineering or equivalent2 years

Physics and Mathematics are required for flight training routes. Management routes are more flexible.

  2. 02

    Choose the route

Flight training at a CAA-approved school, or a degree in aviation management, logistics or business.

  3. 03

    Licensing or degree

Commercial Pilot Licence through an approved training organisation, including medical certification; or a four-year degree for management roles.

  4. 04

    Type rating or operational experience

Pilots require aircraft-specific type ratings; management roles build through operational postings.

Who regulates this

Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority. Flight crew licensing and medical certification are issued by the CAA. Confirm current medical standards and approved training organisations directly — they are strict and disqualifying conditions exist.

If you don't get in

Most students who aim at a competitive route do not get a place on the first attempt. These are the routes people actually take next.

  • Air traffic control, ground operations and airline commercial roles are recruited separately and do not require a pilot licence.
  • Logistics and supply chain degrees lead into the same industry from a wider base.
  • Aeronautical and avionics engineering are distinct engineering disciplines with PEC registration.
