What this route actually is
Computing is the least gatekept of the competitive routes in Pakistan. There is no licensing council, no mandatory registration, and no single entry test — each university sets its own — so the degree matters less than what you can demonstrate.
That cuts both ways. Nobody can stop you practising, and nobody vouches for you either. Employers substitute their own filters: technical interviews, take-home problems, and whatever you have actually built.
What the work involves
- Most work is reading and modifying existing systems rather than writing new ones from scratch.
- Team-based and written: design documents, code review, and explaining trade-offs to people who will not read the code.
- The local market splits between software houses serving overseas clients, product startups, and IT departments inside banks and telecoms.
Worth knowing before you commit
- A degree alone is not competitive. Graduates who cannot show projects, internships or open-source work compete poorly against those who can, from the same institutions.
- The remote and overseas market is real but not automatic — it favours a few years of demonstrable experience over fresh graduates.
- Software Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science and IT are genuinely different programmes with different accreditation. The names are not interchangeable.
The route, in order

ICS, FSc Pre-Engineering or equivalent2 years
Mathematics at intermediate level is the hard requirement at most universities. Pre-Medical students are often eligible only after a deficiency course.

University admission test
NU test for FAST, NET for NUST, ECAT for UET, or a university’s own paper. Several are sat in the same cycle.

BS Computer Science or Software Engineering4 years
Accredited by the National Computing Education Accreditation Council. Check a programme’s accreditation status before enrolling.
- 04
Work or specialisation
Most graduates go straight to industry. Postgraduate study matters mainly for research and academia.

Most students who aim at a competitive route do not get a place on the first attempt. These are the routes people actually take next.
- Merit at the top institutions is high, but computing is taught competently at many universities, and employers in this field weigh demonstrated skill heavily over institution name.
- BS Information Technology and BS Data Science are related routes with lower closing merit at most campuses.
- Self-directed study genuinely works here, more than in any regulated field — but it works alongside a degree, not instead of one, for a first job.
