What this route actually is
Business is the widest and least prescriptive route on this site. There is no entry test common to all institutions, no licensing council, and no single qualification that defines the field — which makes the professional certifications, rather than the degree, the thing that separates candidates.
It suits students who are comfortable with ambiguity and with work that is judged commercially rather than technically. It rewards communication more than any other route here.
What the work involves
- Analyst and associate roles are heavily spreadsheet- and presentation-based, with long hours in banking and consulting.
- Accounting and audit work is deadline-driven and seasonal, structured around reporting cycles.
- Client and stakeholder management becomes the substance of the job well before senior level.
Worth knowing before you commit
- A BBA on its own is a common qualification. The students who convert it into competitive roles are generally the ones who added a certification or substantial internships.
- CA is a long and heavily-failed route, not a formality attached to a business degree. Treat it as a separate commitment.
- The gap between the top handful of business schools and the rest is wider in recruitment terms than in most other fields on this site.

I.Com, FSc, FA or equivalent2 years
Most BBA programmes accept any intermediate stream. I.Com gives a head start on the accounting content, not an admissions advantage.

University admission test
Institution-specific. Several business schools weight an interview or personal statement alongside the test.

BBA or BS Accounting and Finance4 years
Specialisation usually happens in the final years rather than at admission.

Professional certification
CA through ICAP, ACCA, or CFA for investment roles. These run alongside or after the degree and are where most of the differentiation happens.
If you don't get in
Most students who aim at a competitive route do not get a place on the first attempt. These are the routes people actually take next.
- ACCA and CA can be started without a BBA from a top institution, and are judged on examination performance rather than which university admitted you.
- BS Economics and BS Accounting and Finance are close neighbours with different admission pools.
- Business is one of the few fields where a less prestigious degree plus a strong certification genuinely competes.
