What this route actually is
Pharmacy is a five-year professional degree — Pharm-D — with its own regulator, not a shorter version of medicine. It leads into hospital practice, community pharmacy, and the pharmaceutical industry, which is a substantial employer in Pakistan.
It is a common second choice for Pre-Medical students who miss MBBS merit, but the work is genuinely different: medicines and their effects rather than diagnosis and treatment of patients.
What the work involves
- Hospital pharmacists review prescriptions, manage stock and advise clinicians on dosing and interactions.
- Industrial roles cover production, quality control, regulatory affairs and formulation — laboratory and documentation work.
- Community practice is retail-facing, with responsibility for dispensing and counselling.
Worth knowing before you commit
- Industry and hospital roles are quite different careers; the degree does not commit you to either, but the internships you choose start to.
- Community pharmacy in Pakistan is less regulated in practice than the qualification implies, which affects both pay and professional standing.
- The degree is five years — the same length as MBBS — so it is not a shorter route.
