What this route actually is
Public health works on populations rather than individual patients: disease surveillance, programme delivery, health policy and epidemiology. It is the field behind vaccination campaigns and outbreak response rather than the clinic.
It is unusual among health routes in being open to non-clinical graduates, and much of its senior work sits inside government departments, international organisations and NGOs rather than hospitals.
What the work involves
- Data work: collecting, cleaning and interpreting health indicators, and writing them up for decision-makers.
- Programme and field work, including travel to districts where interventions are delivered.
- Proposal writing and donor reporting are a large part of NGO and development-sector roles.
Worth knowing before you commit
- Much of the sector is donor-funded, which makes employment project-linked and less stable than clinical or government posts.
- The MPH, rather than the undergraduate degree, is where most of the career value sits.
- Field postings to districts are normal and are where most early experience is gained.
